Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Border security is a critical element in fostering economic trade and ensuring the smooth movement of goods and people across borders. In Jibia Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, situated at Nigeria’s northern border with Niger Republic, the security of the border has a significant impact on economic trade and cross-border commerce. Jibia has long been an important hub for trade, particularly in agricultural products such as grains, livestock, and textiles, and its proximity to the international border with Niger makes it a vital point for both formal and informal trade activities (Abdullahi & Ibrahim, 2024). However, the region has been grappling with persistent security challenges, including border control inefficiencies, smuggling, and armed conflicts, which hinder the full potential of local trade.
The importance of securing borders cannot be overstated as it directly influences trade flows, market access, and economic stability in border communities (Musa & Adeyemi, 2023). Effective border security not only prevents illegal activities such as smuggling and trafficking but also creates a conducive environment for legal trade, thus contributing to economic growth. In Jibia, poor border security has led to economic disruptions, with traders facing challenges in transporting goods and accessing markets due to security threats (Usman & Tukur, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the relationship between border security and economic trade in Jibia LGA, aiming to identify the ways in which security issues impact local commerce and proposing measures for enhancing trade activities in the area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Jibia LGA has faced challenges related to inadequate border security, which has had a detrimental impact on its economic trade activities. Smuggling, illegal trade practices, and armed incursions have disrupted the free flow of goods across the border, leading to decreased economic activity and limited access to regional and international markets. This study seeks to evaluate the effects of border security issues on economic trade in Jibia and propose measures to enhance border management for improved trade and economic outcomes.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of border security on economic trade in Jibia Local Government Area.
To identify the major security challenges that affect cross-border trade in Jibia.
To propose strategies for improving border security and boosting trade in the region.
1.4 Research Questions
How does border security affect economic trade in Jibia Local Government Area?
What are the key security challenges faced by traders in Jibia?
What measures can be taken to improve border security and promote economic trade in Jibia?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Inadequate border security negatively impacts economic trade in Jibia Local Government Area.
Security challenges such as smuggling and armed incursions hinder the free flow of goods and services across the Jibia border.
Improved border security measures will enhance trade activities and economic outcomes in Jibia.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it will provide insights into the critical role of border security in fostering economic trade in Jibia. The findings will be useful for policymakers, border security agencies, and trade associations, helping them to understand the challenges faced by traders and identify effective measures to enhance border management. The study also aims to contribute to broader regional efforts to improve cross-border trade and promote economic development.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of border security on economic trade within Jibia Local Government Area, Katsina State. It does not extend to other regions or address broader national border security issues. Limitations include the difficulty in obtaining reliable data from informal trade networks and border security agencies.
